Artist Talks are coming to The Secret Gallery in Newent on the 26th October at 6pm but let’s not keep it hush hush!
On October 26th, Canopy will be sponsoring an Artist Talk as The Secret Gallery in Newent in support of Threads of Colour Textile Exhibition featuring work by local textile artists Sara Rickard, Anne Tyhurst, Rachel Hankins, Elizabeth Heather Engel, Lizzie Godden, Gaby Devitt, Helen Crawford and Eileen Waycott.
Gallery owner Hannah Ferguson is looking forward to welcoming you into her beautiful art gallery for an evening with artists Sara Rickard, Lizzie Godden and Annie Tyhurst sharing their work, inspiration, process and practice with a live Q&A to end the session. Other exhibiting artists will also be in attendance for informal chats about their pieces on display.
Canopy sponsors events like these to bring together like minded individuals in the spirit of community to support the local arts. Please come along to enjoy an evening learning the intricacies of textile art making with these wonderfully accomplished textile artists. We’ve got a sneak preview of the show below but nothing can compare to getting up close to admire the detail.

Let’s hear about the artists who will be sharing a closer look at their art & revealing how they create
“I gather leaves, fruit, pieces of fallen bark, old rusty items, and many other finds of interest during walks through the Forest of Dean: these are used in my work as inspiration, for dyeing and printing threads and fabrics, and for constructions. With meditative slow stitching, making paper, using recycled papers and eco printing on to fabric and paper, I creates pieces that depict the many changing colours of the seasons that I love to record as I walk. I delight in observing these countless shifts and mutations: some gentle and subtle, others marked and dramatic. My work celebrates the constant and ever changing cycles of life, continuously revealed through the turning of the seasons.”
Textile Artist Lizzie Godden
Sara Rickard is an embroidery artist who creates the most captivating whimsical textile art with enchanting, hand embroidered animals & nature with a humorous twist. Her work can be found here on her website and was recently exhibited at Nature in Art in Twigworth where she was the Artist in Residence and at farOpen Studios Art Trail. Sara’s work is inspired by nature and the forest. Her embroidery is developed in a series of themes which include rewilding, gardens, re-cycling and stories – often with a sense of fun – whilst her stitching aims to achieve mark making, texture with a rich use of colour.

Annie is a textile artist and traditional upholsterer working in Severnside. Her work is inspired by the surrounding countryside and she is a member of the ‘Severn Sisters’ & farOpen group of artists. She uses natural materials and is a firm believer in using every last scrap of fabric. In her upholstery work she does not work to commission preferring to create beautiful one-off pieces that will last for generations.
