Here is a little information on three of the speakers, artists Sharon Harvey, Carolyn Black and Denise Roberts…

Sharon Harvey
Sharon graduated with a First-Class Honours Degree in Fine Art from Winchester School of Art and was honoured to have been 1 of 20 UK Artists shortlisted for the National Graduate Award organized by London Art Consultants Artiq. This has resulted in a successful ongoing relationship and enabled her to establish her own commercial art practice. Sharon exhibits regularly throughout the UK and is also happy to work to commission. She has work in both private and corporate collections worldwide. Sharon’s paintings are inspired by nature, be it botanical forms, an endless horizon, or the rugged coastlines of the UK. Having moved to the village of Newnham on Severn in the Forest of Dean she is excited to explore these new experiences and landscapes of both river and forest. Whilst developing her portfolio Sharon has recently opened The Sanctuary Studio & Gallery representing both local and international artists, emerging and those more established, with the hope that Newnham can become an art lovers must visit destination
“I am interested in pushing boundaries and am always trying to grow my understanding of what and how we see contemporary painting.
Sharon enjoys teaching but prefers to see herself as more of a facilitator – it is her passionate belief that all humans have a creative capacity and can make and more importantly express themselves through whatever artistic medium they are interested in. Sharon has taught adult learners at the University of Southampton and life drawing workshops for Secondary School pupils, scholarship classes for younger children and occasionally running residential painting workshops for both the beginner and more experienced artist.

Carolyn Black
With an MA in Fine Art (UWIC) and a post-grad-diploma in printmaking, degree and foundation (UWE), Carolyn has a strong lineage of being an artist and applying that in all she does. Whether that is as a practitioner, producer, consultant, tutor or writer, creative practice is central to her life. She has extensive experience of the arts sector– as an artist, a writer, educator, mentor, project manager, curator and producer. For the last 20 years she has been working primarily as a freelance producer, project manager and curator, producing contemporary visual arts projects in unusual locations. Recent years have brought her back to her own studio practice, writing and film-making. All are intertwined.
Places are important to her work – they are never merely a location or backdrop to arts events – they are also the inspiration. It is mostly about the River Severn.
As a Producer she has worked with a fantastic list of specialists – from engineers to acoustic scientists, geologists to soldiers. Under the name Flow Contemporary Arts, she works alongside partners, both art and non-art, to collaborate and deliver ambitious, newly commissioned artworks, to be seen by diverse audiences in unusual locations – beaches and woodlands, canal-sides and redundant buildings – anything is possible when good partnerships are secured and strong visions shared. Carolyn has initiated and delivered numerous public art works – ranging from scattered-site urban international exhibitions to singular sculptures in a rural context. She has substantial experience of fundraising, networking, marketing and of course working with artists on the ground.

Denise Roberts
Denise is a self taught artist with a passion for colour, form and textures. Over the years, she has enjoyed working with different mediums including chalk, pastels, inks and acrylics. As a child living in the beautiful Forest of Dean, she was inspired by the natural world around her and spend many years drawing and colouring, lost in a creative world of colours.
Her work as a Spatial Designer and Visual Merchandiser naturally drew her to attracting and engaging with onlookers to motivate interest in their surrounding visual space. Her love of art over the years stimulated and inspired her creative ideals in her Work-Life Integration.
Denise has been influenced by artists like Dutch still life painter Rachel Ruysch for her use of vivid colours and botanical imagery and America modernist Georgia O’Keeffe for extraordinary imagination.
ABOUT THE GALLERY
Newnham has been setting an example of successful regeneration of the high street with many new businesses taking root over the last few years and thriving despite nationwide fears of survival facing UK high street retailers.
Local independents are working together to offer something truly special with a passion and pride for their craft, hospitality and their town at the core. Newcomer Sharon Harvey is the latest to join other local businesses with opening of

Set on the banks of the sweeping River Severn with the Forest of Dean on it’s doorstop, Newnham on Severn has seen owners taking responsibility for sympathetically renovating their homes and retail spaces, transforming this once sleepy historic market town into a must-visit destination.
Having moved to Newnham on Severn early this year, Sharon Harvey and her husband have been lovingly restoring this Grade II listed building into a comfortable family home with art studio and gallery.
Set in an historic medieval building that brims with charm, The Sanctuary offers contemporary art in a space that is both friendly and welcoming. With a continually changing program of exhibitions, the gallery will be offering a broad spectrum of work from the figurative to abstract and will be representing both accomplished and emerging artists.
Sharon believes “art should be both available and accessible to all” and wishes to provide a “welcoming space that is both relaxing and stimulating to the senses -whether purchasing or just browsing.”
Motivated by the welcoming community spirit she has experienced since moving here, Sharon’s inaugural exhibition is paying it forward by showcasing local artists
Kate Baugh, Jenny Jop, Denise Roberts, TKb_Presses, Shanna Ludwig, Mike Griffiths, Carolyn Black, and herself, Sharon Harvey.
As a show of support, she will be waiving gallery commissions and the costs usually associated with staging exhibitions, allowing the artists to take 100% of the profit to help them flourish.
Sharon explains “As an internationally established artist, I am aware how difficult it can be getting the initial visibility and therefore I am passionate about providing opportunities for local emerging artists as well as those that are more established. Having only recently moved to the Forest I have been both excited and encouraged by the wealth of talent on my doorstep!”
