Celebrating Creativity at Picklenash Primary School

There was a warm welcome waiting for Project Leader Katie Sanderson and artist Joanne Callaghan when they recently returned to Picklenash Primary School in Newent. Their visit marked a special moment — the return of the striking batik flags and banners created by pupils in the lead-up to Newent artsFEST last October.

Now installed on display around the school, these colourful works serve as a daily reminder of the children’s creativity and the shared experience that brought the whole community together.

A Community Effort

In the months leading up to Newent artsFEST, Canopy worked closely with schools, local groups and community members of all ages and backgrounds. Through a series of inclusive and engaging workshops, participants were invited to explore new artistic techniques, connect with one another and play an active role in shaping the festival.

Picklenash Primary School was at the heart of this activity. Pupils worked alongside Joanne Callaghan to design and create a collection of vibrant flags and banners that would later take centre stage in the festival parade.

Discovering the Art of Batik

Joanne introduced the children to batik, an ancient wax-resist dyeing technique that involves applying hot wax to fabric before adding layers of dye. The process encourages patience, experimentation and confidence — and pupils embraced it with enthusiasm.

The results were bold, expressive textiles full of colour, pattern and personality. Each piece reflected the individuality of its maker while contributing to a shared visual celebration.

A Proud Parade Moment

During the Newent artsFEST parade, the flags and banners were carried by the children and their families, who proudly showcased their creations to the wider community. It was a joyful moment that captured the spirit of the project: creativity, collaboration and belonging.

A Lasting Legacy

Returning the artwork to the school completes the circle of the project. The display not only brightens the space but also stands as a testament to what can be achieved when artists, schools and communities work together.
