Sat 25th Feb 2023 led by Roger Drury
On February 25th, Roger Drury led a Creative Walk from the Stone Works, Cannop Ponds up Dram Way, past the two fallen trees to the monument created in memory of those who died in the Union Pit disaster in 1902, before returning to the starting point. The walk was a mix of environmental archaeology and history whilst the monument was found to be poignant & evocative. Walkers enjoyed noting the changes in the Forest and discovering remnants of history with the security of a guide to lead them. The forest was lined with moss and lichen, fallen trees, leaves underfoot and the pussy willow already blooming. The attendees enjoyed writing and sketching along the way and had a throughly enjoyable morning out in nature.
He writes:
“ …as the valley boasts its broadest
after 90 steps there is a frozen wave of leaf land
above the valley the voices of muddy cyclists veer close
a Monument freezes their story”
